EAVC 2008-2009 Club Season Summary

18U Girls Tier 2 Club Volleyball (2009)

The Alberta Volleyball Association’s club season officially began in December. However, our team did not start practicing until February.

On April 18 the Provost team competed in a four-team tournament in Bentley. They finished first in the round robin by splitting two sets with Bentley and defeating Hinton and Smoky River in straight sets. In the semi-finals the girls defeated Hinton (25 – 12 and 25 – 23). However, they lost a well-played final to Bentley (18 – 25, 25 – 19, and 13 – 15).

The next weekend the girls were off to Edmonton to compete in Provincials. On Saturday the girls went undefeated with victories over Chetwynd, Sexsmith, and Ardrossan. On Sunday the playoffs began. Provost narrowly defeated North Peace in the quarterfinals (27 – 25 and 26 – 24). In the semi-finals the girls played Westlock. For the first time in the tournament the girls lost the opening set of a match (17 – 25). However, they rebounded and played phenomenally. The team’s aggressive play in the next two sets led to impressive victories over their opponent (25 – 23 and 15 – 11). In the finals the girls played a very skilled team from Central Peace. The girls opened the match with a 25 – 19 win. However, they lost a see-saw battle in the second set 22 – 25. The third set was exciting. There were numerous lead changes and, at one point, the game was tied 13 – 13. Unfortunately, the girls lost the last two rallies and had to settle for a silver medal at the 2009 18U Girls Tier 2 Volleyball Provincial Championships. It was the first medal for the newly-formed East Alberta Volleyball Club.

Along with a silver medal the Provost team was recognized for their impressive play and two members of the team, Alyssa Downing and Judy Stang, were selected as 18U Tournament All-Stars.

The team consisted of 11 players: Caitlyn Atkins, Michelle Atkins, Alyssa Downing, Brittany Nelson, Jennifer Peterson, Jenelle Pilgaard, Ashley Southoff, Judy Stang, Taylor Sullivan, Rebecca Trenerry, and Janel Walz; two coaches: Mr. Bradley Pylypow and Mr. Riley Kemp; and two assistants: Kaylee Pylypow (“assistant coach”) and Kristen Pylypow (“trainer”).

16U Girls Club Volleyball (2009)

East Alberta Volleyball Club's (EAVC) U16 team Rival had a successful introductory season. This year’s team consisted of coaches: Todd and Erika Cheram; players: Kendra Brown, Courtney Grosh, Emma Huttges, Carrie Jickling, Emily Kellett, Nicole Nelson, Amber Scammell, Kendal Trenerry, Kylee Watchel. and Robin Youse. Rival worked to make great strides during the months of December to May. We attended five major tournaments, including: three Premier tournaments in Edmonton and Calgary, Provincials in Sherwood Park, and Canadian Western Open in Calgary, which hosts teams from as far away as Ontario and the Yukon. At the Canadian Westerns, EAVC Rival battled through injury and tough competition to bring home a bronze medal in division 4 tier 2. Rival had an excellent season, competing with Alberta's best volleyball players. EAVC is looking forward to December to set up teams for next year’s club volleyball season. Coaches, players or sponsors interested in contributing to a growing EAVC volleyball program please contact Todd Cheram for further details.
